Ingredients:
1 medium onion
4 garlic cloves
1-1 ½ tablespoon good extra virgin olive oil
1 pound lean ground turkey
1 pound sweet Italian turkey sausage (or any sausage you prefer)-this is optional
1 28 ounce can of organic peeled tomatoes
1 28 ounce can of organic diced/chopped tomatoes
1 16 ounce can of organic tomato sauce
1 8 ounce can of organic tomato paste (optional)
2 tablespoons fresh basil, finely chopped
1 tablespoon fresh oregano, finely chopped
2 tablespoons dried oregano
1-2 tablespoons organic sugar in the raw
1 tablespoon dried red pepper flakes (optional, can be eliminated if heat is not desired)
To make:
Coarsely chop onion and garlic
Heat 1-1 ½ tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat
Saute' garlic and onion until onion becomes translucent
Add red pepper flakes (if using) and stir
Add ground turkey and break up as you cook, until lightly browned. If including sausage you can add here. Sometimes I grill the sausage separately and add just before serving. This way the sausage can be optional for those who want it.
Drain excess fat
Add whole tomatoes and juice. Stir and break up tomatoes.
